...now what?

"Hi, I applied to grad school and was told I could expect to find out if I was accepted sometime this week, and since I have to register for classes tomorrow..."

"Ah, well, you won't actually have to register for graduate classes that way. It's actually on a different system."

"I see. Do you have any idea when I'll be able to find out?"

"Actually, I was looking at your application this morning and I noticed something really strange - you don't have a single letter of recommendation from anyone in the department! And, you know, when no one in the department will recommend you..."

"But I didn't know that was expected. I've only really worked closely with one professor in this department, and that was this semester, and I didn't really feel like Dr. A knew me well enough to write a good recommendation."

"And there's also the matter of your GPA...2.8, was it?"

"Wait, you guys look at cumulative?"

"Yes."

"I had two classes my freshman year I had to retake. My adjusted GPA is actually 3.012."

"Your GRE math scores weren't great either. And your regular math scores, they sort of zero in on those, you know? An A in Calculus III, a B, and the rest are C's..."

"...is the committee meeting this afternoon, then?"

"Yes, I'll make sure to talk to Dr. A about your work with him, since you don't have any departmental recommendations."

"And I'll find out?..."

"Within the next few days."
